Netronome to Develop SmartNIC Solutions based on OCP v3.0 NIC Specification for Qualcomm Centriq 2400 OCP Servers

OCP v3.0 NIC Specification will Incorporate SmartNIC Design Requirements for Scaling to 100 and 200Gb/s of Performance, Delivering Higher Performance and Efficiency to Telco and Cloud Operators

OCP SUMMIT 2018, SAN JOSE, CA, March 20, 2018 – Netronome, a leader in high-performance intelligent networking solutions, today announced it is working with Qualcomm Datacenter Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., to facilitate Netronome SmartNIC solutions based on the upcoming OCP v3.0 NIC specification, integrated with OCP servers running on Qualcomm Centriq™ 2400 server processors. The joint solution is intended to enable Telco and cloud operators to deliver innovative services, distributed security and visibility functions to a larger set of end customers while lowering TCO to data center infrastructure operations. 

The OCP v3.0 NIC specification supports two new form factors and a broader solution space for NIC and system vendors to provide enhanced network throughput, performance and flexibility. Utilizing its optimized SoC silicon portfolio that efficiently balances network processing, memory access and form factor (size, power) requirements to scale up to 200Gb/s of bandwidth, Netronome is making contributions to the OCP v3.0 NIC specification using proven and applied processes for the most efficient design.

“Hyperscale cloud service providers led the way for adoption of OCP-certified equipment with Telco and Tier-2 cloud service providers now moving to scale deployments with top drivers being customization, power efficiency and cost reduction,” said Cliff Grossner, Ph.D., senior research director and advisor of cloud and data center research practice for IHS Markit, a global business information provider. “In a recent report*, IHS Markit forecast that OCP-compliant servers will represent 18 percent of total server shipped in CY22, with Telco and cloud service providers being the largest adopters, signaling a strong need for high performance OCP-compliant programmable Ethernet adapters.”

The Agilio SmartNIC platform fully and transparently offloads eBPF, virtual switch, virtual router and P4-based datapath processing for networking functions such as overlays, security, load balancing and telemetry, enabling cloud and SDN-enabled compute and storage servers to free up critical server CPU cores for application processing while delivering significantly higher performance.
