Netronome Showcases Next-Gen SmartNIC Delivering 20x OVS Performance at Open Networking Summit 2015

June 15, 2015

Santa Clara, CA – June 15, 2015 – Netronome today announced the company will demonstrate its next-generation SmartNIC solutions that address key performance, efficiency and security challenges posed by SDN and NFV architectures, at the Open Networking Summit 2015 June 15 – 18 in Booth 217. Designed with standards-based open networking software supporting open vSwitch (OVS), OpenStack and DPDK, these breakthrough SmartNICs are designed for standard servers and semi-custom appliances and feature a range of price/performance options. Netronome® SmartNICs are purpose-built for cloud-scale and next-generation datacenters with advanced scalability and security capabilities that deliver best-in-class price/performance.

“Data center architects are actively seeking ways to reclaim their server cores in order to optimize performance for the applications and services that generate revenue,” said Sujal Das, Senior Vice President of Strategy and General Manager of Data Center Business Unit. “At the same time, they want to deliver optimal networking and security processing tasks without compromising performance. Our SmartNICs strike a perfect balance by supporting both of these needs.”

Netronome will provide a compelling demonstration of its SmartNICs at ONS 2015 to showcase complete OVS datapath offload and virtual networking function (VNF) acceleration – all under SDN control that is compliant with OpenStack-supported interfaces. A key element of the demonstration will focus on policy-based forwarding using the OVS datapath running in the Netronome SmartNIC. The net result is a 20x performance increase and a return of an entire CPU socket (or four CPU cores) dedicated to server applications and services.

The demonstration also showcases P4-based server adapter datapath programming using an open source P4 compiler, from the P4.org consortium, that is enhanced to support C-based sandbox applications. This change-ready solution enables data center operators to insert custom metadata or protocols without needing to wait for new silicon. In addition, it helps improve compute and storage server performance through sophisticated analytics and application-centric policy based forwarding.

Created by the founders of software defined networking (SDN), the Open Networking Summit is designed to foster a productive dialogue around the opportunities, challenges and key developments in the quickly evolving world of OpenFlow, SDN and network functions virtualization (NFV). For the past four years, the industry’s premiere event has brought the networking ecosystem of end-users, engineers, business leaders and researchers together in Silicon Valley to discuss the possibilities and shape the future of the networking industry.
